Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) is a subscription-based service that allows IU students, faculty, and staff to use the newest versions of Microsoft Office on their personal Windows and macOS computers, via the web with Office Online apps, and on their smartphones and tablets with Office Mobile apps. Your IU Microsoft 365 subscription allows you to install Microsoft Office on up to five personal computers (Windows and macOS), five tablets (Windows, iPad, and Android), and five phones. The subscription entitles you to use the software as long as your IU computing accounts are active; you are not entitled to use the software after you leave IU.

  • Desktop versions: Desktop versions of Office for Windows and macOS are available:
    • For installation on personal computers, from Microsoft 365 at IU

      32-bit (recommended) and 64-bit versions are available for Windows. For installation instructions, see About Microsoft 365 at IU.

    • For use on computers in the IU Student Technology Centers (STCs)
    • For use on your personal computer via IUanyWare

      IUanyWare lets you run Office applications virtually in a web browser without having to install the applications locally and provides access to your IU Cloud Computing files. For more, see Set up and use IUanyWare.

  • Web-based apps: Web-based Office Online apps are available through Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) and as integrated solutions within IU's SharePoint service.

    Office Online apps are lightweight, browser-based versions of Microsoft Office applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) with features such as real-time co-authoring and auto-saving. For a list of supported browsers, see Which browsers work with Office for the web.

  • Mobile apps: Office Mobile apps for smartphones and tablets are available also from Microsoft 365 at IU. Office Mobile apps are scaled-down, touch-optimized versions of Office applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) available for free from your device's app store.

    Sign into Office Mobile apps using your IU Microsoft 365 account to access your Microsoft OneDrive at IU storage space. To sign in with your IU Microsoft 365 account after installing an Office Mobile app, open the app, and then, when prompted for an email address, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (for example, username@iu.edu).

Students: As with your other IU computing accounts, your IU Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) account remains active as long as you are enrolled at any IU campus. After two consecutive terms (fall, spring, and summer are each considered one term) during which you are not enrolled through the IU registrar, UITS will disable access to your IU.
