In 1866 a hexagonal shaped Post Box designed by an architect & surveyor by the name of John Penfold – was the very first standardised public post box to be erected in London – this became commonly known as the ‘Penfold Box’ – was it green in colour, and displayed the Royal cipher of Queen Victoria – “VR” which stands for “Victoria Regina”. A pillar box is a type of free-standing post box. They are found in the United Kingdom and in most former nations of the British Empire, members of the Commonwealth of Nations and British overseas territories, such as Australia, Cyprus, India, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, the Republic of Ireland, Malta, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. From 1857 wall box-type post boxes came into use for fixing into existing walls. In 1859 an improved cylindrical design of pillar box was created for standard use nationwide. This design had its posting aperture positioned. Pillar boxes (introduced in 1852) had proved to be reliable and popular, everyone wanted their own local post box, but pillar boxes were expensive to produce. For other than city and town locations a cheaper way of providing remote collection facilities was needed and the obvious answer lay in providing a cast iron box that could be installed into an existing wall where such a location conveniently existed.
