As with Diamond and Pearl, Rowan will introduce the game to you, as well as give you the option to choose your character, your name, and your rival's name. You'll be transported to Twinleaf Town, where your great Pokemon adventure begins.
When the news report finishes, your rival will appear in your room and start blabbering on. Follow him downstairs and your Mom will have a chat to you as well. Head outside and go to the northwest building, your rival's house. He'll barge out of the door into you, but remembers he forgot something in his room. Follow him into his house and head upstairs, then follow him outside and north onto Route 201 to find him. Soon after, Professor Rowan will appear and offer you three Pokemon to choose from:
Turtwig A grass-type turtle that will gain a ground type when it evolves | Chimchar A fire-type monkey that will gain a fighting type when it evolves | Piplup A water-type penguin that will gain a steel type when it evolves. Penguins are awesome. |

Rowan and his assistant will head back home to Sandgem Town, leaving you and your rival to test out your newly acquired Pokemon. Both your Pokemon are level 5. If you chose Turtwig, he'll have Chimchar. If you have Chimchar, he'll have Piplup. If you have Piplup, he'll have Turtwig.

Piplup | Level 5 | Water | Pound Growl - -

Following the battle, you'll rest up at home and talk to your Mom. She'll give you the Running Shoes, which allows you to run at double speed by holding down the B button. Head outside and meet your rival at Route 201 again. He'll tell you to go to Lake Verity, so head west and he'll follow you. Standing at the lake's edge is none other than Cyrus, who will briefly acknowledge the two of you before leaving. You'll hear the cry of a legendary Pokemon, and then your rival will leave you to start journeying.

You'll spot Rowan's assistant upon arriving in Sandgem Town. You'll be escorted inside where Rowan will assess your Pokemon, and allow you to keep it and name it. He'll ask you to help in his research and will give you a Pokedex to record information on any Pokemon you encounter. Leave the laboratory and Rowan will give you TM27 - Return as a parting gift. His assistant will show you the Pokemon Center, where you can heal your Pokemon and access your PC Storage boxes, as well as use Wifi and Wireless Functions, and the PokeMart, where you can purchase useful items for the road ahead. Rowan's assistant will then leave for Route 202. You, however, need to head back to Twinleaf to pick up some things from Mom.
At home, you'll tell Mom of your big adventure ahead, and she'll give you the Journal key item to record your activities. Your rival's Mom will also give you a package to deliver to him. That's all for Twinleaf, so say your final goodbyes and head back to Route 202 to meet Rowan's assistant.
On Route 202, you'll be given the traditional 'How to catch a Pokemon' tutorial, and be awarded five Pokeballs for participation. Follow the path to Jubilife City. You'll encounter some trainers along the way, so don't be afraid to head back to Sandgem if you need to heal your Pokemon.

When you first arrive, you will be confronted by Prof. Rowan's assistant...again, who will talk you further into the city. You'll notice a shifty character darting between some lamposts - this is the Detective who you'll encounter many times in your journey. He'll hand you the Battle Recorder, and leave. Rowan's assistant will point you towards the Trainers' School, so head inside.
New Item: Battle Recorder - This item allows you to record your battles and send them over Wifi for friends to view
Inside the Trainer School, you'll find your rival. Deliver the parcel to him and he'll give you a Town Map. Head outside, and the President of the Poketch Company will inform you about a promotion - find the three clowns around the city and he'll give you a Pokemon Watch, or Poketch for short. The first clown is between the Pokemon Center and the PokeMart; the second is outside the Poketch Company building on the west side of the city;the third is outside the TV Station building.
When you have them all, return to the President and he'll give you a Poketch with four applications ('Apps' for short). The Poketch in Platinum looks slightly different than from Diamond and Pearl, and has an option to cycle both forwards and backwards through your apps. You're pretty much done with Jubilife at the moment, so head east onto Route 203 where your rival will confront you.
Rival Battle | If you chose: Turtwig | Chimchar | Piplup

Starly | Level 7 | Normal/Flying | Growl Quick Attack - -
Chimchar | Level 9 | Fire | Scratch Leer - -
Piplup | Level 9 | Water | Pound Growl - -
Turtwig | Level 9 | Grass | Tackle Withdraw - - |
After the battle, your rival will continue east to Oreburgh Gate and Oreburgh City. Follow him; you'll encounter some trainers along the way.

|
When you first enter the cave, the man at the entrance will give you HM06 - Rock Smash, who allows you to break certain cracked rocks around the world. You will need Oreburgh Gym's badge in order to use it outside of battle. Continue east to the tunnel exit.
When you arrive at Oreburgh City, one of the residents will take you straight to the Gym, where your rival is waiting. He'll explain that the Gym is closed, and that the Gym Leader is inside the Oreburgh Mines. Head to the city's south side and enter the mines, and you'll find Roark at the southernmost point inside the cave. When you find him, he'll return to the Gym to face you in battle.
|
|
There are two trainers in the Oreburgh Gym that you'll have to get through before you challenge the Gym Leader. Alternatively, you can take the long way around and skip the trainers entirely.
Oreburgh City Gym: Roark Speciality: Rock | Pokemon | Information | Moves |
Geodude | Level: 12 Type: Rock/Ground | Rock Throw Stealth Rock - -
Onix | Level: 12 Type: Rock/Ground | Screech Rock Throw Stealth Rock -
Cranidos | Level: 14 Type: Rock | Headbutt Leer Pursuit -
If you chose Turtwig or Piplup, you should have no problem with Roark. If you chose Chimchar though, you should at least go and catch a Machop on Route 207. Save your best Pokemon for Cranidos, which is Roark's strongest Pokemon. Be aware also that he will use Potions if his Pokemon are low on health, so watch out. |
When you defeat Roark, he will give you the Coal Badge, which will allow you to use HM06 (Rock Smash) outside of battle, as well as TM76 - Stealth Rock, which inflicts damage to your opponent according to their type effectiveness against the Rock-type when they switch Pokemon.
